Collection: Preamplifiers & Phono Stages

A preamplifier is the control center of a separates system: it selects your source, sets the volume and feeds a power amplifier. A phono stage, or phono preamp, boosts the very small signal from a turntable cartridge and applies RIAA equalization so records play at the correct level and tone. This collection includes phono stages from Unison Research and line preamps and DAC-preamps from NuPrime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a phono stage for my turntable?

Yes, unless your amplifier or turntable already has one built in. Check for an input marked Phono.

What is the difference between MM and MC?

Moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) are cartridge types. MC cartridges have lower output and need a phono stage with MC gain.

Can a DAC replace a preamplifier?

If your sources are all digital, a DAC with volume control can drive a power amplifier directly. For analog sources you still need a preamp.
